Job Description

The Library Assistant plays a key role in the successful operation of the school library, or as we call it, the Learning Resource Hub (LRH) and its associated teaching programmes. The Learning Resource Hub is a busy and demanding work environment and the ability to work within a team and to communicate effectively with others is essential.

The Library Assistant is responsible for providing library and research services and maintenance of the Learning Resource Hub and its collections under the direction of the Librarian.

The Senior Library Assistant is responsible for managing the learning space, maintaining our digital resources and leading on the audit and development of our physical collections.

Role And Responsibilities

  • Assist in the promotion of the school Learning Resource Hub, its resources and services.
  • Assist learners, teachers and staff in using the Learning Resource Hub Catalogue.
  • Assist teachers in promoting reading and guide learners in individual choices of books available for recreational and research reading.
  • Respond to daily requests for information and resources.
  • Prepare and distribute overdue notices.
  • Organise resources for easy access, availability and effective use.
  • Carry out daily shelving and regular shelf tidy of the collection.
  • Maintain the Destiny Catalogue system to support circulation, cataloguing, and increased access to academic resources.
  • Assist with annual inventory.
  • Assist with the yearly rollover of Destiny Catalogue and online subscription data.
  • Repair, cover and process new resources, assist with weeding and the annual stocktake.
  • Assist with the creation of information displays and carry out other activities to help make the Learning Resource Hub a welcoming, pleasant, and helpful environment.
  • Assist with the smooth running of day to day operations, procedures and routines, including daily circulation duties and initial orientation.
  • Assist with the upkeep and maintenance of the Learning Resource Hub, ensuring it is safe, clean, comfortable for learners and staff, and assist with managing the overall safety, cleanliness and soundness of the Learning Resource Hub.
  • Help to coordinate and schedule use of the Learning Resource Hub and its facilities for classes, book fair, author visits and other events.
  • Supervise learners in Learning Resource Hub during break, lunchtimes and after school activities.
  • Involvement in whole school events and activities as required.
  • LTo perform any other duties as assigned by the management, stakeholders and reporting manager/link.

Senior library assistant

  • LLiaise with suppliers to organise the procurement of student textbooks, library resources and development of the digital collections.
  • LCollate and review usage statistics to inform collection development
  • LTrain staff on the use of library systems.

Qualifications And Skills

  • LDiploma in Library or Information Science (preferred) or related tertiary qualification
  • LGood knowledge of library techniques, systems, working tools, procedures and cataloguing library resources
  • LSkill in the use of standard library methods and principles in cataloguing, classification, circulation and reference services
  • LAble to carry out cataloguing of both English and Mandarin language resources (preferred)
